How it works
How HelpSignal works
HelpSignal shows the latest provider-updated status for local urgent resources: shelter, food, transportation, showers, warming centers, and more. Tap what you need, see what providers say is available, limited, full, call first, or closed today, and decide whether to call, come in, or try another option. No account required.
Four steps
Search
Tap a category like shelter tonight, food, a shower, or a bus pass. No login and no personal information required.
Check the status
Each resource card shows the latest provider-updated status, the time it was last updated, and any public note from the provider.
Act with confidence
Call, get directions, or open the full listing for hours, intake instructions, eligibility, and documents required before you travel.
See how fresh it is
Every listing carries a last-updated time. When a provider has not updated today, the listing honestly shows “Not Updated Today” instead of a stale status.
What the status labels mean
Providers choose one of these labels. They are the same labels everywhere on HelpSignal.
- Available
- The resource can generally be accessed today under normal rules.
- Limited
- Some capacity remains, but it may run out. Check the public note for details.
- Full
- Capacity is gone for now. The note may say when to check back.
- Call First
- Phone the provider before coming in.
- Appointment Required
- Access requires a scheduled appointment.
- Referral Required
- Access requires a referral from another agency.
- Closed Today
- Not operating today, regardless of capacity.
- Not Updated Today
- Shown automatically when the provider has not updated today. The listing may still be accurate, so call first if you can.
- Unknown
- The status cannot be confirmed right now.
What HelpSignal does not do
- HelpSignal does not replace HMIS, coordinated entry, 211, provider intake, or case management. It complements existing systems by adding a public-facing status layer for local urgent resources.
- It does not guarantee availability, beds, placement, or services.
- It does not collect client records or personal information from the public.
- It is not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
Availability is not guaranteed. Status is based on the latest provider or admin update. Call first when possible.
